September 11

I’m actively avoiding today’s media frenzy. Planning to camp in front of the Tivo and reveal in the dopey comedies I’ve been stockpiling for the occasion. If you’re looking for perspective, the words I wrote 10 years ago. say it best.

Fuck, I’ve been shoveling this crap for a long time.

Deal Trend Fizzles

September 3, 2011 at 9:39 am | No Comments »

I’ve never understood the hype over those dopey daily deal email schemes. Save 60% on crap you wouldn’t buy otherwise! What a bargain! I just don’t see how outfits such as Groupon or Living Social add up to billion dollar valuations. And their schlocky email come ons are not the future of advertising. Perpetual discounts can’t build long-term brand value.

Finally we’re seeing signs this particular bubble looks about to burst. Even if shams like Groupon manage to launch IPOs it probably won’t be too long before other people start calling them the Webvan of the social media bubble.

Unsubscribing from all of these annoying lists is the next big trend. You read it here first.

Stasis

I feel like I’ve been in stasis most of this month. Always happens between semesters. Not that I’m complaining or anything. In fact it’s kind of nice because I can just sort of zone behind the facade of normality. Most people have to waste vacation time to do the same thing.

But it does make for rather dull blog updates. Sorry about that.

Meet Rick Perry—Hypocrite, Traitor, Moron

Why is the national media giving Rick Perry serious consideration? This guy suggested Texas should secede in 2009. Yet no one points out his hypocrisy when he calls the head of the Federal Reserve a traitor. Worst of all, he seems to think that our problems can be solved by mass prayer and to get there he partners with an organization on record stating that the First Amendment only applies to Christians.

I’m Mad as Hell and I’m Not Going to Give Anymore

Howard Schultz, Starbucks CEO, has the right idea. Cut the national politicians, both parties, off from funding until they stop the political brinksmanship. Join the boycott. Email your representative, Senators and the White House. Stop writing checks. Stop volunteering. Get mad as hell.

A few random thoughts from my day.

-Bi-annual torture of dental x-rays this morning. Not sure why they bother since nothing ever turns up.

-I normally like the folks at my Gay Disco Dentist but this morning’s hygienist had foul breath. You’d think they’d be hyper-aware of such hazards.

-I’ve become quite addicted to Bi-Rite Creamery’s soft serve sundae specials. Today was salted caramel and coffee swirl with hot fudge and marconas.

-Why the hell sheeples wait in a block long line for scoops when there’s never a line at the soft serve totally escapes me.

-Google+, like the vast majority of social media schemes, mystifies me. In the time it takes to figure the crap out, you can build your own bloody site.

You probably are as well but just too dumb to realize it.

Random currents

Not really surprised by recent events on a macro level.

Have expected some right-wing nut to come unhinged and start killing people. Just didn’t expect it to happen in Norway.

I know it’s cruel but I’m not shocked that Winehouse bought the farm either. How could anyone? Yeah, tragic and all that but oh-so predictable. Suicidal even. Should anyone–management, record company, fans even–be held responsible for enabling her self destruction?

Then the Murdoch phone hacking hubbub. Couldn’t happen to a more deserving family. I wouldn’t mind seeing them lose everything. The real tragedy is the hundreds of innocent workers who lost their jobs when News of the World closed yet the Murdochs keep billions.

Not Everyday

Took 280N, Cupertino to SF tonight. Hardly worth comment until we passed a dozen or so CHP around an airplane parked on the shoulder.

The seminal L.A. punk band X plays the Great American Music Hall tomorrow. I’ll be there. How about you?
