Loving Hunter Douglas

I was upset with Hunter Douglas because they sold us a blind that failed twice in six years and didn’t honor the lifetime warranty for the second repair. Except not really. Everything I reported in my Feb 24 post was filtered through Home Depot, the dealer where we originally got all the blinds in the house.

After venting my frustrations here, I composed a concise but thorough letter to the CEO of Hunter Douglas. I wanted an apology for not living up to their lifetime warranty and hopefully a refund of the repair cost. Within days I got both a phone call and email from the company. Not only did they apologize and commit to refunding the $44, they offered to make us a new blind with an improved lift mechanism and have it installed. A few weeks later, all turned out as they promised. We’ve got a new, much improved blind and a refund for the bogus repair fee. Needless to say, I’m thrilled.

I won’t go into details but I’m convinced that Hunter Douglas never asked for the repair charge in the first place. The stupid, incompetent Home Depot employees decided on their own to shaft us. Moral: If you’re forced to go through a dealer and you’re not happy with the results, contact the manufacturer directly.

If you found this entry because you’re shopping for blinds, Hunter Douglas makes a great product and they really do stand behind them. You can buy with confidence. I can’t say enough good things about the company.

But avoid Home Depot at all costs. From my experience, any money you might save upfront is completely cancelled by having to deal with the uncaring mouth-breathers who work in the stores.

    As a Hunter Douglas Gallery store I can’t argue with anything you’ve said in your blog. However I found it interesting that your page has advertisements for blind websites, who offer no service at all and every possible no-name, no guarantee brand out there. Every repair required UPS fees and more.

    I don’t control the ads that appear on the page. Google places them based on key words in the entries and the route that you take to arrive here. If you came through a search, odds are high that you’ll see an ad related to the term used. Whereas someone who loads the page from a bookmark moments later might see a completely different set of ads.
