Execution

While I’m normally opposed to any state taking a human life, I have to view the execution of Osama Bin Laden as just. It’s long overdue. This moment should have taken place nine years ago; I still hold Bush responsible for the Iraq distraction. However, the notion that this is a moment to celebrate strikes me as wrong. Justice, yes. Vindication, yes. Avenging thousands of deaths, yes. But a cause for celebration or joy, no. The death of another human should never be cause for rejoicing. No matter how heinous the person in question. I was prompted to post these observations because the tv news showed pictures of morons leaping with joy in front of the White House tonight. It should surprise no one that one prominent individual wore a Texas flag as a cape. I don’t believe such behavior will do the U.S. cause any good around the world. Hopefully we saw just isolated reactions of a small minority. Maybe the majority of Americans will adopt President Obama’s tone. Serious. Determined. Resolute. I find hope in words from the victims themselves.

“This is important news for us, and for the world. It cannot ease our pain, or bring back our loved ones,” said Gordon Felt, president of Families of Flight 93. “It does bring a measure of comfort that the mastermind of the September 11th tragedy and the face of global terror can no longer spread his evil.”

This is just how i felt. I found facebook posts regarding the death in a crass manor distastful and was annoyed with the over all celebratory mood of the whole event. I did bear in mind these are likely the same group of monkeys that plastered the American flag on everything, a general disregard for the importance and prestige the flag once represented in my opinion.

Wow – I really am behind on checking your blog. Ditto that. I was disgusted by folks who were treating it like it was a football game victory. I understand relief, even a bit of a sigh or “finally”…but dancing in the streets? Only if you’re celebrating the end of a WAR. This wasn’t an end.
