Damn, I just erased a couple of hundred email messages. In fairness, all had been read. And they'd been sitting in my inbox for days, weeks, even months. But I'm kind of a pack-rat when it comes to email so it bothers me that they're gone. Poof.

Here's what happened. I've clung stubbornly to POP for my main stumble account since the beginning of email time. I don't really know why. But with the new mobile device, I decided that IMAP would make things easier. Read in one place, read in all. So I took the POP client offline, set up the IMAP account and what do you know, it worked.

But in my zeal, I decided to just delete a bunch of dormant accounts that have been cluttering things up for ages. Boom, boom, boom. And while I was at it, I nuked the POP version of stumble--not considering that those 200 plus unfilled messages in the inbox would vaporize along with the account.

Oh well. I don't think there was anything that vital in there. I hope.

The point of all this? If you wrote me and didn't get a reply, assume your message is gone. Send it again and I will get back to you. Promise. Mean it.

Yes, I got one. No, I didn't wait in any line. Portrait was taken with the iPhone's built-in camera. improvement over the Razr's camera I think.

Apple certainly played the PR angle brilliantly. Has there ever been a consumer product so hotly anticipated?

I pretty much ignored the hoopla though. There was no way I was standing in a line for more than a few minutes when they'd be available from the online store. So I had a nice dinner with friends then was getting ready to scope out the local AT&T store. Literally putting on my jacket when I got a text from Chris with the news that the mega-line at the Stockton St. Apple Store had dissipated.

So Marc and I headed downtown instead. Once we arrived, I strolled right into the checkout queue. Only about 10 people in front of me when I arrived. Walked out of the store less than 15 minutes later with my colorful but starkly black bag.

First impressions are good. iPod, phone and SMS functions are all strong. Email seems superior to any other mobile device I've used. (Never have had a Blackberry in all fairness.) I'm less wowed than expected by the web on it though. Even with the finger flick navigation and pinch zoom, the experience doesn't come close to surfing from a wide-screen desktop display and RAM-laden CPU.

The biggest hole for me is the lack of any IM capability. Every mobile handset I've ever had could connect to the AIM network in one way or another. The omission is so obvious I can't believe it was unintentional. Something must be waiting in the wings.

Busy busy few days. Mass media consumption has been taking place. On the movie front, you must see A Might Heart. Absolutely stunning example of film making.

Recently discovered the Fox sitcom The Loop. Love the gruff boss. And the main character is appealing in a wide-eyed, fresh-faced sort of way. Best of all the scripts have some genuinely good writing. On network tv. Imagine.

We did manage one Pride-ful kind of thing this weekend. Caught the final show of the current run of drag-powered Golden Girls live. Quite a hoot. Too bad if you missed it. Though the girls said that they'll be back for the holidays. Something to look forward to at least.

Did you know the Federal Neutrality Act existed? I didn't until today's news of arrests in the alleged Laotian plot. Apparently it's illegal for US citizens to plot to overthrow a foreign government. Now why weren't Bush, Cheney, Rice, Powell, et al arrested back when they were plotting to overthrow the Iraqi regime?
