April 30, 2005 The downside of starting to recover from the cold/flu thing? First night coming off NyQuil. I tossed in bed for 90 minutes before deciding to screw it and read. An hour later, I'm still wired.

April 26, 2005 If there's ever a good time to get a cold, it's Passover. If only because matzo ball soup can be found easily, even by goyim like me.

April 23, 2005 I loathe the notion that blogs are somehow different and distinct from the rest of the web. The whole concept of a blogosphere is as laughable as Webvan's business plan. BusinessWeek's breathless cover story this week on the b-word set me off on this particular rail but the thoughts have been bubbling in the back of my mind for a few weeks now. Unless you're a media conglomerate of the McGraw Hill or Dow Jones ilk, weblogs are no different than say nytimes.com. It's all just content or a few more seconds of distraction. Who cares if the writer pounds the keyboard in midtown newsroom or happens to be cooling his heels in small town New Hampshire while his bf attends law school? Yes, that thought must be awe inducing to the media titans. But come on, the self-aggrandizing hyperbole, astounding predictions and hipper-than-thou lingo (MSM? Flogs? Dooced? Please.) all smell suspiciously of the overheated days of 1999. This newfound ability for individuals to have worldwide distribution of their formerly private musings wont' kill mass media, just as television didn't kill the film industry, piano rolls didn't kill live performance and video didn't kill the radio star. And if anyone tries to convince you differently, kick him in the nuts then moblog him writhing on the ground.

April 10, 2005 I'm angry with the Apple Store. Three weeks ago I bought a rather pricey pair of Bose headphones with my latest iPod. My intent was to use the Bose pair at the office for those times when I need to isolate myself and get some writing done. Fast forward to this past week and I actually need to write more than a pithy headline or two. (Sad truth is that most days my job entails meeting after meeting with very little actual creativity required.) I pull out the Bose phones only to have it dawn on me after about 10 minutes that something is off. The music seems lopsided. As if all the musicians are standing somewhere just behind me off to the right. Today, I took them back to the Apple Store thinking that I'd quickly exchange them and be on my way. But no. They refused to deal with me. Said i'd need to contact Bose for warranty repair. Maybe I shouldn't be but I'm outraged. A month hasn't gone by yet. I've yet to even get the American Express bill with the charge for the blasted things. This is the second run in I've had with Apple Store employees since the first of the year. I think they're getting too cocky. Obviously, they don't need or care about my ongoing patronage given the appalling customer service I've experienced. Update After speaking with Bose and being reassured that all their dealers are contractually required to offer a 30-day return policy, I went back to the Apple Store Wednesday night. Though this time to Stonestown here in the city rather than across the bridge to Corte Madera where I had the run in on Sunday. As soon as I said that Corte Madera wouldn't exchange them, the gentleman behind the counter interrupted saying, "But you have 30 days. That's outrageous." He then proceeded to make the exchange, told me the name of the manager in Corte Madera, how I should complain and generally made things right. |
