January 31, 2004 Rich and I had one of our prototypically delightful dinners with Janet and Chrissy last night. After leaving the restaurant, we walked up the block to avail ourselves of the ATM. Then heading back to the car, all four of us started bitching about the chill (in the space of less than one block mind you). Once inside, I opined that it seemed we'd been having a particularly cold winter. Then Janet pointed out that it wasn't really cold compared to his youthful winters on the midwestern plains but it still felt cold. (This exchange took place despite the presence of a glowing dashboard computer display showing an external temp of 51F.) Fast forward to this morning and the young, bracingly-cute Matt K puts our silly chatter into perspective with his entry on Minneapolis weather, "You know it's cold outside when the liquid that surrounds your eyes starts to freeze." Hello I'm Mark, the weather weenie.

January 29, 2004 Badvertising ripped from the airwaves mere moments ago: "Lenscrafters. You'll see. We're better." I shudder to think about the lines that got rejected.

January 26, 2004 Passed a milestone of sorts tonight. Had my first class as the instructor. I've taken on a portfolio development class, which is really an extension of the kind of thing I do on a daily basis at work anyway. Young minds. Under my influence. You can be afraid.

January 23, 2004 Decades after I last heard it, that song, it's still etched in my mind. Along with images of Mr. Green Jeans, Dancing Bear and of course the Captain. (Though truth be told, my single digit aged mind always got him a bit confused with the captain of the Crunch variety.) Goodbye Captain.

January 20, 2004 Simone is nine years old. On Saturday, in between playing football, sitting down for a big family lunch and watching a spot of television, he spent the day smoking, like almost all his friends and the rest of the town. He is seven years too young to buy the cigarettes himself, but that is okay. "My parents bought me some" he explains. (Link swiped from Matthew.)

I need to get something off my chest. I'm afflicted with a horrible illness. I am a shoeaholic. Yes, it's painful to admit but I have to come clean in hopes that the glare of the public spotlight will jolt me into remission. I can't stop buying shoes. I'm addicted to new ones. Look at that pile above. And that's my haul just since the beginning of December. Adidas. Kenneth Cole. Banana Republic. New Balance. Benetton. Merrell. Converse. Diesel. I love them all. I want them all. Obviously I've watched too many episodes of Sex. Carrie has possessed me.

January 19, 2004 During my first trip with the 30GB iPod last summer, I made the mistake of jamming it into the bag with my noise-canceling headphones. Wound up with a couple of deep scratches right in the middle of the screen. Not a happy moment in the friendly skies. Tonight, I'm kind of amazed to say those scratches have disappeared. Vanished as if they never happened. If you've got an iPod, even if you haven't done something dumb to it yet, get the iCleaner Pro kit while it's on sale for $19. Even the back is mirror-like again.

January 14, 2004 Imagine for a moment. You've got these cheap plastic food containers. From IKEA, something ridiculous like 20 pieces for $4.99. Three have been in the refrigerator for too long. A couple have smoked fish and chopped red onions that appear to be growing beards. The other contains canned cat food in a flavor that Trixie turns her nose up at. Do you: a) steel your courage with a shot of scotch then dutifully dump the noxious contents into the garbage and wash the containers for re-use; b) drown your guilt with a shot of vodka and toss all three containers into the trash cute while singing "Que Sera, Sera"; c) pour yourself a shot of tequila and ignore the entire mess?

January 12, 2004 Just in case anyone else is using MT and Safari, the always adorable Chris pointed me to a fun bit of code that makes the bookmarklet thingy work. Courtesy of Very Big Blog.

Andy at work loaned me a copy of Gigantic last week. Finally got around to watching it this weekend. I just ordered my own copy. You should too.

As threatened, I went down to LA yesterday for the auto show. Had a great time hanging out with Shari who graciously fetched me from Bob Hope. (Interesting to note that despite the cheesy banner hanging on the tower, burbankairport.com has no mention of the new moniker. Maybe that's a good sign?) Have to admit, I'm a bit disappointed in the LA show. It's consider one of the major shows so I was expecting Detroit-style spectacle. Instead, it was just a big collection of production vehicles with a handful of concepts for good measure. In many ways a bigger, more crowded version of the annual November event here at the Moscone. Porsche put up a great display for the 40th anniversary of the 911. And Volkswagen had the class to use attendants at the Phaeton. They allowed one group at a time up close and in the car while everyone else watched from behind velvet ropes. Much better than the typical massing around popular vehicles or the completely hands off approach of the exotics. Regardless, I got to see the three I mentioned yesterday and then some of course. Big observations? GM remains hopeless. Though only the XLR, Corvette and Cobalt represented the interesting new models. Maybe if the Solstice, Curve or Nomad had made the trip, I'd feel differently. Daimler-Chrysler's 300C and Magnum twins look as if they were styled by Roger Rabbit. Ford could have a hit with the all-wheel-drive 500. And the Mazad 3 is hot.

January 10, 2004 Yeah, I know it's too early. But I'm up because I'm heading to OAK for a jaunt to LA. Realized Thursday that the LA Auto Show would be up through Sunday. While Detroit's getting all the headlines right now, LA is still supposed to be a major show. And since I've never been, I figured what the hell. Am I going to get any other chances to see the Carrera GT, Maybach and Cadillac Sixteen all in one afternoon? Speaking of shows, Macworld just ended here of course. While iPod Mini has gotten all the headlines, I believe GarageBand deserves the acclaim. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that it has the potential to unleash a creative revolution in the music field to the same degree that PageMaker 1.0 did in publishing. Consider this: Coupled with the internet, GarageBand means that any motley crew of teens with a cheap Mac suddenly have access to dozens of instruments, a 64-track recording studio and the ability to get their music in front of the public.

January 08, 2004 By the way, mucho thanks go out to Chris, Jessie, Brian and Darren for prodding, ecouraging and shaming me into moving over to MT. I owe each and everyone of you many cocktails. Or much cock. Your choice.

Okay, I just remapped my site to turn on the Movable Type powered blog. Can you feel the tingling in the air? For the one or two non-geeks in the audience, the proceeding means that what you're reading is created and stored on my server and slapped together nice and fresh every time I post a new entry (re-entry) or you make a comment. Yes folks, you read right. You can comment away on what I've written. (Not that I will pay a lick of attention.) I am so cutting edge, circa 2001.

Changes are afoot. I'm switching hosts so I can have more interesting things happening here. DNS changes might take a couple of days to propagate so don't be alarmed if this page or email is wonky for a bit.

January 03, 2004 Invasion of the Poddies? God that's frightening. I never imagined that the little iPod would conquer the world when I bought mine two plus years ago. Now I'm not sure I like the idea of being associated with folks who claim they have a psychic connection to the little box of plastic, metal and silicon. (Link swiped from matins.)

Went to sync/charge the iPod after my workout this morning and I noticed that some of the song titles morphed themselves into Chinese characters. I could understand if it was Wang Chung but Tony Bennett's Playing with my Friends?

January 02, 2004 Look! Jessie sent me his self portrait. Isn't that sweet! And so thoughtful of him to let me know the special way he wants to be satisfied. I'm lucky to have such a good friend.

January 01, 2004 No, your eyes don't deceive you. I've done a bit of remodeling for the new year. Finally got rid of the frames. I'm trying out Dreamweaver's template feature. Hopefully it will allow me to build a bunch of stand alone pages that can still be updated en mass. If this works as I hope, I'll be applying the new look to most of the old content soon. Who knows what else waits in the wings. |
